It may sound strange, but sad to say, there are things from the past that continue to upset us, every time we remember them. There might be hurts caused by others, pains caused by the losses we have suffered or something we have done. All suffering can be used by the devil to "bind us" and make us feel that we must suffer and lose our joy.
But the truth is that they are only "chains of smoke" that we can easily break if we recognize their source. Joy and peace are the fruit of the Holy Spirit, but it is up to us to let them manifest, because the Holy Spirit does never forces us to do anything. The more we ask the Holy Spirit to direct our steps and decisions, and to teach us God’s will, the sooner we can identify the enemy's attempts to steal our joy and peace. When we continue to think about and dwell upon the things we cannot change, "the enemy’s chains” will wrap around us tightly, stealing our freedom. The more we allow them to keep us in bondage, the longer it will take to break free. But how can we become free? By proclaiming God’s Word, in opposition to whatever tries to bind us, every lie can be overcome by the truth. And the Word of God is the absolute truth! Here are two sections of Scripture that we can proclaim to liberate ourselves.
If we learn to "empty our cup of frustration" before the Lord, telling Him what bothers and irritates us, we will be able to behave better with those around us. By doing so, we can be calmer and have a more loving attitude. We can have much happier lives when we recognize that the thoughts which do not do us any good or improve the situation, actually make things worse, depress us and hurt us. The Holy Spirit is ready to help and guide us in all truth, if we will only call upon the Lord. God created us to enjoy our fellowship with Him and we can have complete confidence in His love and help, no matter how hard any of the trials are that we have to go through. Let us not forget that we are never alone and the Lord's will is for us to win and be His forever! Carmen Pușcaș

Fall is in the air... at least in the northern hemisphere.
Every year, as fall comes I am reminded of so much. According to Jewish tradition, the anniversary of the six days of creation, including of Adam and Eve, is about this time of year. In contrast, it is interesting that the crucifixion happened in the spring, the time of new life. Our Lord had to die, just like a seed, so that we His offspring, could live. In many places, the leaves are beginning to turn color and fall. Eventually things will get colder. And finally the cold will give way to spring, the wonderful time of new life. Also according to Jewish tradition, this begins a new year. On the 1st day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei (sundown, Sept. 29, 2019), begins the Hebrew year 5780. This day is known as Rosh Hashanah. The Hebrew calendar is considered to be from Creation unlike the Gregorian calendar most of us follow which is considered to be from the birth of Christ. To the Jews, it begins a time of introspection. On the tenth day from the first day of Tishrei, is what is called Yom Kippur which is the anniversary of the Day of Atonement. On the tenth day, the high priest would go into the most Holy Place of the Temple, and make an annual sacrifice for the sins of the people. This is no longer possible for them, for they have no Temple, most Holy Place or Ark of the Covenant (where the blood of the sacrifice was applied). Just the same, Jews that are serious about their faith today, still consider it a time of forgiveness and introspection. Many forgive debts or crimes committed against themselves or loved ones during this time and many seek forgiveness from others. It is something to be revered. Today, for Jews who believe in the true Messiah and Gentiles who follow Jesus Christ too, we have one High Priest who died for all our sins and makes intercession for us all. And we are His body, the body of Christ. We are living temples of the Holy Spirit. He has made a better way for us. Through Him, we have all the forgiveness we will ever need. But we can pause and consider the old Hebrew ways and see the types and shadows of Jesus. Such as how the sacrifice being offered had to be without spot or blemish like Jesus, even though the one making the offering was far from perfect. We can stop and be reminded again, that as gruesome as it is, without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sin. Thankfully we have a Savior, one who never sinned, who paid our penalties. If one will take the time to study the Jewish holy days and customs, there are many more parallels to be gleaned. For now, we can enjoy this seasonal change, along with its cooler temperatures. We can even enjoy the winter that is coming, or for some of us, tolerate it, because we know that in time, spring and new life will come again. E. Cockrell When I first became a Christian, I came to believe that true preachers and ministers have perfect faith, they never doubt, are always cheerful and have no real problems because God must love them more than the rest of us. I felt that my faith was inferior and felt bad about myself, because when I would pray and the answers would not come as fast as I wanted, I would start to doubt whether it was God’s will and if I would ever receive my answer. Additionally, when the hardships of life seemed overwhelming, I would doubt that God still loved me.
But I could not have been more wrong! After paying more attention to what my favorite ministers were saying about themselves in their messages, I realized that what I was feeling happens to all Christians at times. The war between God and the devil will continue until the end of this universe. As Satan cannot directly hurt God, he tries to destroy us, those whom God loves, in his attempt to make God suffer. The devil tries to bring deception, lies and condemnation in our minds and as long as we believe them as being our own thoughts and truthful, will be defeated. We need to recognize our enemy. So how does this happen? The Holy Spirit revealed to me a huge truth that may help us realize why we all wavering so much in our walk with the Lord. As long as we live in these physical bodies, our carnal nature is at war with our new good nature. When we become born-again Christians, our spirits become transformed, becoming new and perfect as the Holy Spirit came to dwell in us. When we are in anointed church services, we study the Bible, have fellowship with other strong believers, or pray and worship God, the Holy Spirit that lives in us is in full control. Whenever that happens, we allow the fruit of the Holy Spirit to rule our carnal nature and manifest in us. This is when “love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23) manifest naturally, in and through us. But, when we are tired, upset, hurt or under pressure for too long, our carnal nature can easily suppress the Holy Spirit and take control, causing us to feel and behave exactly the opposite. This is why we need to learn to control our emotions and to mature spiritually. In another instance, the Holy Spirit taught us that we can overcome hardships and challenges when we “choose to praise and worship God” instead of “focusing on the problems” and allow despair and discouragement. If we wait to worship God at church or only when we feel like doing it, we may never do it on our own. Whenever we suffer, it is hard feel like worshiping God as long as we only consider the current situation we are in. But if we choose to think about who God is and how much He loves us, that He gave His Son to die in our place, only because He wants to have us with Him now and in heaven for all eternity, we can start to praise Him. The more we remind ourselves of God’s promises and that in Him are are more than conquerors, we will see our problems start to diminish in our eyes (You may read encouraging Bible verses in the articles from the "Encouragement" section). The truth is that as long as we choose to follow Jesus, even if our bodies die, in a split second we get to be with our Lord in heaven, where there are no more tears, suffering or pain. We can truly reign in life, through Jesus and live the abundant life He came for us to have and finish it in Jesus’ arms! Carmen Pușcaș Sometimes the little things in life may seem insignificant, but oftentimes, the little things make big differences. In cooking, a small bit of seasoning, may be just the amount that it takes to make a great dish. In art, no masterpiece would be complete, without the “finishing touches.” And so on... On the flip side, sometimes, some little thing may be just the thing that trips us or someone else. A bad look, a seemingly innocent word may be taken in a hurtful way, etc. I had a great grandmother that was known to say quite frequently, “if you take care of the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves.” In Grandmother’s way, she was saying that if we take care of what is little, we will reap bigger benefits! The Lord said in the parable of the unjust steward, in Luke 16:10a, “He who is faithful in a very little [thing] is faithful also in much.” Sometimes, we get caught up in the busy-ness of life but need to slow down and pay more attention to the little things. It is also well known, that when little neglected things pile up, they turn into bigger neglected things that are much harder to remedy. The Lord does not rush or get caught under pressure. He always knows the bigger picture and handles everything from a position of strength. But for us as humans, we have limited view. And we live in a demanding world that could have us jumping from one so-called important thing to the next. If we want an abundant life and not just a busy life, we have to choose wisely. Thankfully, we are not our own, we belong to the Lord! And while we may not be able to see the full picture, He can and He has given us His Spirit to live within us and to guide us through life. And the Lord wants us to have real life in Him, complete with His grace and wisdom. Let’s slow down and be more selective about what we allow to keep us busy! Let’s take more time to call upon the Lord and listen for the Holy Spirit who is always with us, to help us make the best choices. Some people think they cannot hear God. But if we pray to Him for His direction, then listen and trust that He will guide our minds and hearts to make the decision, He will, for this is how He works. Let’s be the best stewards we can be of what the Lord has blessed us with. Whether it is one more bite of something or not eating it at all. Taking the time to encourage our spouses or children, even taking time to stop and smell the flowers. We can even be wiser with our little purchases... knowing in the long run that we will then have more on hand for the bigger purchases. Being good stewards with our lives adds up and when we are faithful to the Lord in the little things, those bigger things naturally go better too! E. Cockrell “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” - Jeremiah 29:11 God’s plan for every single one of us is the best and by fulfilling it we can have a great future while our hearts are full of peace, joy and hope.
Most of us do not like change or trying new things that seem risky, but we still do it, when there is no other choice. Maybe you are one of those that have experienced failure in the past and you have decided that it is safer to not change anything, even if you have lost your joy and peace by remaining in the same job or place, longer than God has wanted you there. The devil likes to attack our self value, as he wants to make us think that we cannot be happy and prosperous. Then, while going through a hard season when it seems that God does not answer our prayers the way we want, the enemy tries to get us to believe that the Lord does not love us anymore. The self-image we have, affects our present and future. If we have a low self-image, we cannot have faith for a better life, a better job or ministry. We cannot picture ourselves as being able to thrive in life and be truly blessed. But because Jesus is our Lord, God’s desire for our lives is to always have more than enough, enjoy our lives and jobs, having a positive impact in the lives of those around us. God wants us to enjoy adventure, to desire to try new avenues in life and be ready to obey Him whenever He asks us to do something new. We miss so much by not being willing to take a risk and go an extra mile, when God leads us to do so. It is okay to make mistakes, when we miss God’s directions. As long as we keep a pure heart and have the right motives in what we do, the Lord will get us to a broad place again and restore what we “broke,” by missing His guidance. Adventure requires boldness. We cannot be bold if we have no confidence in who we are in Christ and what He can do in us and through us. But to be confident, we need to have a healthy self-image by evaluating ourselves correctly. Maybe it is time to realize that we can say what Paul said in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me” and start to step out in faith obeying God in starting something new. Carmen Pușcaș
Father God loves us to the fullest and unconditionally. God is love and we should not be surprised that Jesus says that He loves us just as He is loved by His Father. The more we obey God, the more we prove our love to Him and the happier we become. As we try to please those that we love and we love to see them happy and smiling, we should also want to please God, to abide in Him all the time, to obey His leadership and to constantly communicate with Him through the Holy Spirit. If we ask the Holy Spirit to help us understand how much God loves us and to fill our hearts daily with His love, we will be able to truly love others, too. Obeying the command of loving one another, is also beneficial for our own selves. You may wonder what I mean by that. Well, first of all, we are happier when we love, secondly, it is easier to forgive those that we love. When someone that we love hurts us, it is simply easier not to be offended or hurt by their words and actions than when someone else does it. Isn’t that true? We give grace to those we care for. The more we love people, the more of “Jesus’ full joy” fills our hearts. So, by loving others we become more blessed and live happier lives.
It is easier to obey the commandments when we love. The lawyer who came to test Jesus, understood that love is the core of God’s law. To love is the greatest commandment. To love God more than anything else and then to love our neighbor, as we read in Galatians 5:14 “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Full joy has no room in the same heart with unforgiveness, frustration and discontent. The Word of God teaches us to forgive, as we want to be forgiven by the Heavenly Father, who does it fully, unconditionally, and keeps no records of what He has forgiven. God forgives us when we sincerely ask Him to, because of the sacrifice of Jesus who cancels the guilt of sin. When we are discontented, we fall more easily into the traps of the enemy because we no longer hear when the Holy Spirit warns us of danger. The more we keep our peace and we choose to be thankful to the Lord for what we have and what awaits for us in heaven, the more we will enjoy the full joy that Jesus promised us. Carmen Pușcaș Before modern times, animals were used to pull wagons and plows. Oxen or horses were put two-by-two (side by side) and a yoke (long piece of wood with two harnesses), was attached to each animal.
It was important to use two of the same kind of animals, similar in speed, strength and stride together. If not, one would drag the other one down or pull the other one into more than it might have been capable of handling. Once one animal was yoked up with the other one, they had to work together, for better or worse. In the second letter Paul wrote to the Corinthians, he used the analogy to make a point.
Many consider this command to only be about marriage. But marriage is only part of it. As much as possible, we need to heed what the Lord spoke through Paul. In heeding it, there is harmony and strength. In disregarding it, there is stress and expense, not to mention the loss of the blessing that could have been had from being wisely yoked. True Christians do not think like unbelievers. When we are lost, self is our lord. As Christians, Jesus becomes our Lord and our spirits become born-again. Our minds become reprogrammed according to God’s Word and we literally no longer think like we used to. Here are examples, of being yoked with another or a group showing how it can be beneficial or negative. Friends, who are also Christians, help build one up and consider what the Lord and His Word think about where they go, how they handle themselves, etc. Hang around with lost friends, and it is easy to go back to the old worldly habits of sin. When it comes to jobs, try to work for and with other Christians for the same reasons. Real Christians have a conscience and they will not lie, cheat or back stab you. Sadly, in the absence of born-again consciences, people may, or may not, deal with circumstances, projects, sales, etc the same way Christians will. Sometimes in our naivety, Christians can expect unbelievers to think and act like Christians, but in reality, it is unrealistic. To go into a business, or group investment, together with others, can be challenging even with like minds and consciences. To do so, with unbelievers can be expensive. There once was a man who got into a group investment. A series of events and mistakes made their project go in the negative. They all wanted to declare bankruptcy instead of make good on the situation. The Christian had an impeccable record in finance and they out-voted him and filed for bankruptcy anyway. So, being an honest guy of true integrity, he worked for years and paid all the people affected what he felt like it was that they had coming, despite the group. Dating and marriage are of the utmost importance in the matter. The Lord wants His children to marry other believers, so their children will be raised in Him. If one will refuse to date unbelievers, it will make marrying one a lot harder to happen. One should not only consider dating Christians but should only date strong Christians. They should be sincere in their faith, with a good spiritual track record! If they are Christians in lip service only, but in reality, tell white lies, are not sincere in their worship and prayer, don’t tithe and give extra, don’t take care of their possessions as in good stewardship, etc... how would one ever have a strong relationship in the Lord with them and live a blessed life? A dreamer who thinks they can “save” the other one, usually experiences much pain and hardship. Often times, the unbeliever winds up dragging the Christian down. With any union that we ever make, we need to be careful. When a good Christian teams up with an unbeliever, or even a weak Christian with bad judgment, they can easily suffer when the other one builds up credit card debt, makes foolish choices, fails to have full integrity, possibly cheats on them and so much more. What Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians about not being unequally yoked, was not a suggestion. Can we always do it? After all, we go to school with unbelievers, we vote with them, drive on the roads with them, etc... The answer is: not always... but as much as we can, we certainly need to make our unions with Christians who have good consciences and godly wisdom. Eli Cockrell If you would like to read more about being unequally yoked, please see the article, Being Unequally Yoked. When Jesus came as one of us, He said to many, “Follow me,” and the call is still going out today! As the first Adam failed, Jesus came as the last Adam, to make the way for us have union with God again. Jesus never broke union with the Father. Jesus and the Father were only separated when Jesus took our sins.
The Lord paid the debt for our sins and for those of us who will receive the pardon He offers, and follow after Him, we become citizens of the kingdom of God with the promise of eternal life. Jesus said that He came to bring us “life and life more abundantly.” In the very beginning, in Genesis, we see that Father God wanted the best for Adam and Eve and their descendants. Later, the Lord showed us great mercy through Noah. And still after the Flood, we see where the Lord would make a way for us again, by calling out a man named Abram.
The Lord chose Abraham to be the progenitor of our faith! We see that if Abram would listen to the Lord (obey Him), that the Lord would make a great nation from him and even more. If Abraham would obey the Lord, then in his obedience, God could bless him. And even make him a blessing. And those that blessed Abraham were blessed and those who cursed him were cursed. Through Abraham all the families of the earth have been and continue to be blessed, just as the Lord promised.
God wanted an abundant life for Abraham, to make him a blessing and to use him to birth a people that would be eternally His. Jesus has become the life-giving Seed through Abraham. Just like Abraham, when we give our all to the Lord, we open the door for the blessings of God. While God can redeem many bad situations, He does not bless disobedience. Sadly, we actually curse ourselves when we sin. In Christ and through Christ, we find the abundant life Father God has always wanted for us. Praise the Lord, that as Christians who daily listen to God, truly following the Lord through our born-again spirits, no longer enslaved, subjecting ourselves to the rule of the carnal nature, we find true life and abundant life in Christ! We find amazing union with God Almighty, through the Holy Spirit, who is here to strengthen and direct us in all our ways! I pray that you have given your life to Christ and have continued following Him finding the blessings and rewards, in being the daily harmony with Father God! Eli Cockrell If you would like to know more about this abundant life in Christ, we have an article called, True Happiness. If you have never truly repented and accepted the salvation that Jesus offers, please see our article called, Salvation. If you gave your life to Christ before, but somehow slipped of the narrow path and would like to get right with God again, please see our article, Return To The Lord. Since the first sin, mankind began to be led by their carnal nature instead of the spirit, as God created us to be. All wisdom that does not come from God, including human wisdom, is called “demonic” in James 3:13. So, we should not be surprised that the most spiritual battles we have to fight, are against our own carnal nature, in order to keep it under submission.
We are familiar with the verses of Romans 7.
The war between our carnal nature, the flesh, and the born-again spirit never ends. Our spiritual condition is the direct result of who is winning this continuous war. The more we feed our spirits, by studying the Bible, praying, and seeking to have an attitude of praise and thankfulness towards God, the more we overcome the impulses and lusts of our sinful nature. It is up to us to continually crucify the flesh and to strengthen the spirit.
Whatever is more important to us than God, becomes an idol and sin. If not corrected we will stray from the narrow path that leads to Jesus. Our goals in life show to whom we belong. If we seek to have the fruit of the Holy Spirit and do whatever the Scripture tells us to do, we fight the good fight of faith and we will end our race in the arms of Jesus. The choice is up to us.
Our cravings, hobbies, desires and dreams that we pursue determine our actions and how we live. It is a continuous battle between good and evil, between obedience and rebellion, between light and darkness, and the decisions we make, moment to moment, determines who wins. Whenever we make the right choices, in submission to the direction of the Holy Spirit, we are victorious and free in Jesus Christ. If we are free, we can help others in obeying the Lord, knowing the truth and becoming free, also. Carmen Pușcaș One of the best examples of the love of God, we find in "the parable of the prodigal son" (Luke 15:11-32). The younger son showed a lack of love and respect when he asked for the inheritance that he should receive only after his father's death. He further demonstrated how irresponsible he was,"leading a distraught life," and squandering the fortune for which his father had probably worked hard. He did not come to “his senses” until he was forced to work with pigs to survive. Pigs were part of the unclean animals, and they were an abomination to the Hebrews. Humility and lack were hard to endure, but only when he got to his lowest, did he realize how he had ruined his life and that he would be much better off returning to his father as one of his servants. The once arrogant young man, finally realized how much he had wronged his father and did not deserve to be his son anymore.
The father not only welcomed him, but ran to meet him, hugged and kissed him dearly. Instead of receiving the treatment he deserved, the prodigal son was treated by his father as if he was the best, most loving and obedient son. The father honored him with the best clothes and a royal reception, serving the most delicious foods, as he wanted everybody to rejoice with him because his son who "was dead and now was risen; was lost and now was found." This is how the Heavenly Father is about all who return to Him. We all have treated God with disrespect, irreverence and wasted the inheritance of eternal life for all the years we lived apart from Jesus. There are not many who repented when everything was going good in their lives. Most people come to the Lord only after they have reached their braking point and were out of solutions. No matter how small or great the sins are of each one of us, we have all sinned, and the most serious sin was that we did not accept the sacrifice of Jesus for us. But when the Holy Spirit convicted us of sin and we understood that we needed a Savior, it was enough to call on Jesus, repent and ask Him to be our Lord, to become born-again. The Lord runs to meet every “prodigal” son who returns "home" and “... there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." (Luke 15:10). In His love, the Lord does not look at the disobedience, the rebellion or the gravity of the sins we repent of. God treats everyone of us as a beloved one. This is what He has always done and will continue to do until Jesus returns on the clouds to take us to heaven. When Jesus became the Lord of our lives, we stopped wandering and found the “way” to true life. Jesus is "the way, the truth, and the life." He is the only way to God the Father (John 14:6), and when we leave this world behind, we will enter into real life, the eternal life in His presence.
If we live in obedience to the Lord and wish to please Him, we have nothing to fear about. Jesus says “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). We have no reason to fear men, because if our bodies would be killed, our souls and spirits would simply and instantly be in heaven. The only fear we need is “the fear of the Lord” to keep us on the right path. Carmen Pușcaș |
