COMMON CAUSES OF SICKNESS

There are multiple causes of sicknesses. And we all know from our own experiences that there were various reasons for the suffering we have had throughout our lives. Sometimes we are the only ones to blame, and we get sick because of what we do, or do not do, by the attitudes of our hearts, by the stresses we voluntarily put ourselves under, by working too much and resting too little, or for some people, the cause is a dependency they find pleasure in, or that they believe they cannot escape. The truth is that Jesus has delivered us from the power of sin and death, and for anyone who trusts in Him there is no dependency that He cannot deliver them from.

• Romans 6:6 We know well that our old man was crucified with Him (Jesus), so that the body of sin would be stripped of its power, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin,

 

• 1 Corinthians 15:56-57 The rod of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law. But thanks be to God, who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

 

• Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, so death spread to all men, because all sinned...

Every disease is meant to destroy us and ultimately bring death. Since sin entered the world, some plants have become toxic, and some animals have become carnivorous or poisonous, and can harm us. As sin abounded, sickness and all that is evil has reduced the human lifespan. Despite all the discoveries of science, doctors continue to see themselves powerless against many diseases. For example, in the case of a cold, the treatments discovered only relieve the symptoms (runny nose, watery eyes, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, cough), but they cannot cure it. On the other hand, the fact that in civilized countries, Christians have access to health systems, most of them run to the doctor first, or research their health issues and treatments on the internet or with friends, instead of praying and believing that through Jesus they were healed. What is more beneficial: to pursue an expensive, unpleasant, and perhaps even painful treatment, or to study what the Bible says about healing until we receive the revelation that Jesus has already healed us by the stripes He received? If we stand firm in the belief that it is only a matter of time before we also see the physical manifestation of healing, we will be healed. Sometimes we get healed instantly, sometimes it may take a while, and in some situations the doctor can solve the problem we have very quickly and easily. The more often we choose to resist any sickness from the first symptoms, the more we will strengthen our faith and the faster we will receive the answer in the future.

• 1 Corinthians 15:26 The last enemy to be destroyed will be death.

Death is called the enemy in the Bible, and Jesus will ultimately defeat it forever. Until then it is our duty to keep our faith alive that the Lord wants us healthy and to resist the sickness in the Name of Jesus, being sure that it must flee from our bodies.

• Proverbs 4:24-27 Banish untruth from your mouth and remove cunning from your lips! Let your eyes look straight and your eyelids look straight before you! May the path you walk on be smooth and all your paths be decided: turn not to the right or to the left and beware of evil!

Lies or hypocrisy have no place in the mouth of one who wants to live according to God’s will. Cunning is a word with many negative connotations, and it goes hand in hand with lying and cheating. All these are traits of the devil, not of God, and those who practice them cannot truly serve our heavenly Father. We are urged to do everything right, be honest, not have hidden goals, to analyze our choices to please the Lord and to stay on the narrow path of holiness, without deviating to the right or to the left, by sinning.

When we behave like the devil, we expose ourselves to sickness, because any unrepented sin gives the enemy the right to harm us. If we really want to be healthy, we will seek to do what pleases the Lord so that we walk in His blessings and favor.

Let's not forget that sin is the root of sickness, all that is bad and destroys us. Sickness entered the world through sin, and on the cross Jesus paid for both sin and sickness (Isaiah 53:4-5, 1 Peter 2:24). Through sincere repentance we receive forgiveness of sins, and the root of health issues is removed. When the root that feeds the sickness is gone, and if we know the truth that in the spiritual world the sickness has been removed, we will be made whole again. The problem is that we do not automatically come into possession of what is already fulfilled in the spiritual world. It is up to us to renew our minds and study the biblical truth about healing until we believe it with all our hearts. Our faith does not force God to do, what He does not want to do, but is meant to bring into the physical world what Jesus has already done in the spiritual world. To walk in divine health, we must change our lifestyle, and truly know that “The Lord is our Judge, the Lord is our Lawgiver, the Lord is our King: He will save us!” (Isaiah 33:22).

• James 3:14-16 But if you have bitterness in your heart and a spirit of contention, do not boast and do not lie against the truth. This wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, natural, devilish. For where there is discord and strife, there is disorder and all kinds of evil deeds.

God's Word teaches us to keep our hearts pure, to cleanse ourselves of “bitterness” (the Greek word is “pikros,” meaning “harshness, virulency,” according to “Strong’s Concordance”) and to seek peace by avoiding strife. Whenever we have any negative emotions in our hearts, it won't be long before we are tempted to boast or lie. In fact, James shows us that the source of these emotions is our human nature, which is a fallen, evil nature. This is a destructive mindset, and the result is restlessness, disorder, and all kinds of evil deeds. For those who have these negative emotions constantly, it does not take long before it takes a toll on their health. Why? Because God created us for: love, joy, peace, and everything that comes from the presence of the Holy Spirit, and negative emotions and thoughts are toxic to the physical body and make us sin before God. Let's not forget the negative effects of anger, arguments, and criticism on our relationships. A discontented, sad, and negative heart leads to a negative attitude and an unpleasant presence that everyone wants to avoid. James summed it up very well when he wrote that it leads to “all kinds of evil deeds.”

If we do not care about what we fill our hearts with, we will allow destructive things to become part of us and it will affect our health. Horror movies or those that contain dirty scenes, crimes, sinful examples, deceptions, lies, adultery, and all that is bad, do not relax the viewers, do them no good, and on the contrary, fill their hearts with negative emotions and their minds with thoughts and images they may never forget. Our fleshly nature is very strong and in order not to be led by it, we must fight to be led by our spirit. The Christian is called to live led by the born-again spirit, where we have “the mind (“nous,” meaning “mind, reason”) of Christ” (2 Corinthians 2:16). The truth is that it takes effort and determination to choose to enter into the presence of the Lord so that we can hear and do what the Holy Spirit says.

Also, one does not have to watch much television to see drug advertisements for countless sicknesses and conditions. These ads are designed to induce fear of the specific sicknesses in all who see them, so that they will want the drug. If we fail to avoid them, we are in danger of thinking that maybe we have that problem, and then the enemy can attack us with that sickness. Then we will have to fight against those thoughts and that sickness in the Name of Jesus.

Another cause of illness is exhaustion. If we work too hard, don't get enough rest, and don't eat properly for long periods of time, it will not be long before health problems can arise. God created our bodies to be restored during deep sleep. If our sleep during the night is mostly in the light sleep stage and we wake up at the slightest noise, we are not really resting, and our bodies are not getting the restoration they need. As a result, we feel tired all the time. If we do not change our lifestyle, we will become exhausted and possibly sick.

Jesus wants us to do everything together with Him, to help us when it is difficult for us to find rest for our souls, to find it in Him, and as a result we can be relaxed and truly at rest (Matthew 11:28-30). A close relationship with Jesus, in which we give Him our cares, problems and fears, and grow in His likeness in love, kindness, gentleness and holiness helps us recover from all exhaustion. When we communicate continuously with the Lord, we are able to work and rest as needed, without stress and worries. It is up to us to choose to have close fellowship with the Lord and to enter into His presence daily, so that we do not miss anything that He has for us. If there is something wrong in our body, the Lord will warn us, but we must want to hear the warning and then prayerfully seek what our heavenly Father leads us to do for our healing. By living this way, we will be able to enjoy health and the wonderful life that Jesus wants us to have.
