We know that God wants us to live healthy lives, full of His joy and peace, but we seem to have a hard time believing that it is possible to walk in divine health. The Word of God teaches us countless times of how we can have the abundant life that Jesus came to give us (John 10:10b). If we ask the Lord to reveal these truths to us, He will. The Holy Spirit enlightens the heart of anyone who wants to know the truth of the Bible and helps anyone who wants more of the Lord.
If we want to be healthier, we seek to keep the faith alive in our hearts that the Lord wants us healed and that He has already done everything in His power to heal any sickness that may attack us. We will resist every symptom of sickness in the Name of Jesus from the moment we realize it is attacking us, and we will not stop until it leaves or until we hear what to do from the Lord.
It might be helpful to reread some of the articles from the Healing section, several times until what you know in your mind becomes living faith in your spirit. To have a firm faith, we need to keep it alive and active, and to continuously nourish it. Because we live in these carnal bodies, it is not enough to have faith for healing one time and then automatically have faith for the next time. We must spend time feeding our spirit with God's Word daily, and with biblical messages of healing to strengthen our faith. As we spend more time being led by our spirit, and not by our flesh, our hearts become more sensitive to whatever the Lord tells us. This helps us hear the Lord’s warnings quicker and follow His guidance better so that we can be blessed, healthy and fulfill His plan for our lives.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:22 Avoid everything that seems evil.
The Bible teaches us to not only avoid what we know is evil, but also what might be evil. In other words, let's choose to not do wrong and also avoid those who do. Why? Because we can fall into sin and harden our hearts, and from there, the road to sickness is short. When we have no desire to study the Word, to pray, to glorify the Lord, and we do not seem to have any reason to be thankful, it is time to search our hearts to see why they have hardened. After we discover the reason, we ask for forgiveness and force ourselves to pray and spend time with the Lord, studying the Bible and praising Him, until we feel the presence of the Holy Spirit again and we are filled with the love of the Lord. In the heart are the springs of life, and if the heart is hardened, the springs dry up.
- Proverbs 4:23 Guard your heart more than anything, because from it come the springs of life!
King Solomon, led by the Holy Spirit, teaches us that the heart must be guarded at all cost. Nothing is more valuable than a pure heart, that is pleasing to the Lord. This is the kind of heart that glorifies God, thanks Him for all things, and is full of love and all that is good. It is the kind of heart led by the Holy Spirit and an abundant source of life.
The warning that Jesus gave the man that was sick for thirty-eight years after He healed him, validates the connection between sin and sickness.
- John 5:14 After that, Jesus found him in the Temple and said to him: “Behold, you have become well; from now on sin no more, so that something worse does not happen to you.”
The fact that Jesus told the healed man that something worse could happen to him than being unable to walk, shows that the effects of continuing in sin while aware of it, could even be worse. If we love the Lord sincerely, we will hate sin and not continue in it, and live the kind of life that enables us to be healthier.
The more we do God's will because we love Him, the less reasons for unhappiness we will have. And a happy heart is good medicine for our bodies and keeps us healthy. God does not ask us to do what we cannot do, nor what is to our detriment. On the contrary, everything He asks of us is good and helps us maintain our physical, mental, and spiritual health.
We don't have to study much about the human body to understand that it is designed by God to fight off the attacks of pathogenic germs through its immune system, to recover from physical or emotional injuries and to withstand most attacks. Also, no treatment heals the human body without its cooperation, but only creates the conditions for healing, while the body heals itself. But if we lose the balance in which God created us to live, through physical, mental, or emotional fatigue, excessive stress, worry, fear or prolonged anxiety, the body loses its ability to defend or restore itself, and we can get sick. It is much easier to prevent disease than to fight for a cure. That is why it is important to have a healthy lifestyle and to put our trust in the Lord in all aspects of life. Only in this way will we be able to reduce stress, worries and fears and enjoy everything that the good Lord has created for us. If one continues to do the same things or has the same dependencies that led to their sickness in the first place, they will not be able to keep their healing. For example, if one has lung problems, they cannot continue to smoke or inhale the smoke of other smokers, and believe that once they are cured, they will remain cured. Or sometimes we must lose weight and restrict our food choices to stay healthy. If health problems are caused by what we eat, what we drink or the weight we have, even if we receive a miracle healing, it will not last long, if the cause is not corrected. I don't want to discourage you, but sometimes we have to realize what the root of our problem is, in order to solve it. God loves us and has given us self-control through the Holy Spirit, so that we can refrain from what harms us. We can indeed do all that God has called us to do, through Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:13).
The following verse contains the essence of everything we must pursue in this life.
- Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.
The original Greek word translated “meditate” is “logizesthe,” and means “to consider, weigh, meditate on something with a view to obtaining it” (according to “Thayer's Greek Lexicon”). So what should we concern ourselves with, and think about in greatly desiring to obtain? All that is true, honorable, fair, and pure. Let us also seek and desire all that is worthy of love. Let us allow into our lives, hearts, and minds only what pleases the Lord and deserves to be received. Let us seek and do the good works, for which we may receive the proper praise. When our thoughts, emotions and actions are only focused on these things, we are happy. If we occupy our minds with these kinds of thoughts and have these kinds of goals in our daily lives, we give no place to worry, fear, and negative memories and they can no longer steal our peace and joy. And if we are satisfied and happy, even the negative actions of others do not hurt us as much anymore, because we tolerate more, and it takes longer until we get upset. Thank God, we can actually live healthy!
- 1 Thessalonians 5:23 May the God of peace Himself sanctify you fully and may your spirit, your soul and your body be kept whole, blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
In order to have optimum health, it is important to have a healthy spirit and soul, which leads to the best physical condition. The body actually reflects what is happening in the unseen spiritual realm. If the soul and spirit are filled with all that Philippians 4:8 says, the body will also be healthy and full of strength. Likewise, the actions of the body affect the mind, emotions and will, which form the soul, and whenever we sin, it negatively affects not only our soul, but also our spirit. The more we are filled with Jesus, the more we belong to Him and the more dedicated we are to Him. The sanctification that we can only receive from the Lord gives us the most wonderful peace. God had Jesus to become sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21). In Jesus we have sanctification, and only by being filled with Him, are we able to keep our spirit, soul, and body whole, clean of sin, until the end! The whole spirit belongs entirely to the Lord and will live eternally in His presence. The soul is whole if it is freed from what the devil has put in the mind (traumas, strongholds, negative and destructive thoughts and memories, etc.) and in the heart (annoyances, feelings of inferiority, rejection, insecurity, frustrations, offenses, etc.) and submitted to God's will, free from any rebellion. A sin-cleansed spirit and soul will be reflected in a healthy body of a happy and fulfilled believer.
It is also very important to be careful what we watch, what we listen to and where we go. What we have seen even for a few seconds, the devil can use to tempt or condemn us, and it may take us years to erase such things from our memory. The devil will use everything he has inspired us to store in our memory to tempt us. His attacks do not stop even when we sleep, as he may cause us to have nightmares if we do not make it a habit to give God our thoughts and dreams and ask Him to guard our sleep. Any negative image that is toxic to our brain becomes a permanent memory if we bring it back to the conscious mind several times, by continuing to think about it. The devil knows that if he reminds us long enough of something that has negatively influenced us, such as a bad opinion of ourselves or others, or any other negative thought, it will become a permanent, automated memory. Just as handwashing becomes a mechanical act through endless repetition, of which we do not need to focus, so does any automatic memory return to our conscious mind at any slight similarities. It is a very insidious and effective attack that is self-perpetuating in our lives, while the evil one does not need to continue to do anything for it. But glory to God, because we already know that He created us capable of modifying our thinking and regenerating our brains. Any toxic, negative memory can be replaced with the correct, beneficial one, based on the truth of God's Word, which is the absolute truth. The Holy Spirit urges us through the apostle Paul to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2b).
Rest is as important as exercise to have a healthy body. We can have peaceful, restful sleep without nightmares if we do as Jesus has told us to do.
- Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is good and My burden is light.”
God gives us complete peace when we give Him our thoughts, worries, anxieties, frustrations, and everything that happened to us during the day and that would disturb our sleep if left unresolved. If we make it a habit to give these thoughts to the Lord before bed and read the Bible to feed our spirit and clear our mind of thoughts that could steal our sleep, we can sleep better. During deep, dreamless sleep, the brain cleanses itself of toxins produced by nerve cells as a result of the day's activity. But for this cleansing process to take place effectively, we need several hours of deep sleep from about 7-8 hours of restful sleep each night. Lack of sleep makes us grumpy, lack energy, and if we do not get enough sleep for longer periods of time, the brain cannot eliminate toxins and we expose ourselves to illnesses with bad consequences.
Jesus tells us to give Him our burdens, and even our fatigue, so that we may receive His rest. When we do everything together with the Lord in our lives, we ask Him to lead us and we obey whatever He tells us to do, we no longer go through problems and difficulties alone, because we are yoked with Jesus. This means that He will bear our burdens and teach us how to deal with all situations. Jesus is the most perfect example of humility and meekness, and if we choose to be like Him, we will rest better and live happier lives.
In conclusion, the more we seek to know the Lord through His Word, spend time in His presence and do His will, recognizing and resisting the lies of the evil one, the healthier and happier we will be. Life is a wonderful gift and worth living for the glory of our Lord and Savior!
